LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team split a United East Conference-Skye Division doubleheader with Cairn University on Saturday afternoon at the Stillman Complex. The Highlanders captured game one by a 5-1 final and the Falcons took game two by an 8-5 final score.
Game One – Cairn 5, Cedar Crest 1
The Highlanders put up three runs in the second inning to secure the early advantage. First-year Ella Quince (Morrisville, Pa.) singled to the outfield and the base hit brought home first-year Evelyn Johnson (Yardley, Pa.). Sophomore Jolene Zefferi (Bristol, Pa.) crossed home on a single to the pitcher by junior Julia Bruestle (Abington, Pa.). Quince then came home to score after Bruestle stole second base to make the score 3-0.
Cedar Crest tallied its lone run in the fourth after first-year
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) reached base on an error and sophomore
Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) came around to score on the play to cut it to a two-run deficit, 3-1.
Cairn tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth, both coming by way of bases-loaded walks. Sophomore Myiah Petroro (Long Island, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Johnson while Quince touched home on another bases-loaded walk, drawn by sophomore Sydney Wright (Souderton, Pa. ) to push the score to 5-1.
Johnson picked up the win in the circle, tossing a complete game for the Highlanders. She gave up one run on two hits while striking out nine and walking six.
Junior
BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) registered the loss, surrendering five runs on six hits. She also fanned one and walked three.
Sophomore
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) and junior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) each had a hit for the Falcons. Faw had the one run scored for Cedar Crest.
Quince went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Johnson followed, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Cairn.
Game Two – Cedar Crest 8, Cairn 5
Cairn struck first with a double to center field in the first inning, bringing around Petroro to give the Highlanders the early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons pulled even in the third frame after junior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) connected on a double to left center, plating senior
Anaya Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) to tie the contest at one.
Cairn re-gained the lead in the fourth following a double steal. Bruestle stole second and then Quince stole home to put the Highlanders on top, 2-1.
Cedar Crest plated three in the fifth inning to snag the 4-2 advantage. Mullen delivered an RBI double to left center, which scored Duncan. Mullen then came around to score on a error in the infield. The final run of the frame came on a base hit to right center field by Hasert, scoring first-year
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior).
The Highlanders got a run back in the sixth before the Falcons registered four runs in the seventh to extend its margin to five, 8-3. Hasert registered an infield base hit to start things off, which plated Mullen. Sophomore
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) followed with a single to bring around Gronkowski for the next tally of the inning. Senior
Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) recorded a base hit through the left side, allowing Hasert to cross home. The final run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by Duncan, which was deep enough to score Kline.
Cairn got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the seventh to make it the 8-5 final.
Senior
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) recorded her second win of the season in the circle. She threw a complete game and gave up five runs on 12 hits. Additionally, Mundy had four strikeouts and walked three.
Mullen paced Cedar Crest at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hasert went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Ferraro pitched in a 2-for-3 game with an RBI. Gronkowski finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cagle followed with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI. Duncan went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kline went 0-for-3 with a run scored.
Cedar Crest (2-16 overall, 2-6 United East-Skye Division) returns to action at Delaware Valley University on Tuesday, April 16 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. Cairn (3-21 overall, 1-7 United East-Skye Division) remains home to host Saint Elizabeth University on Monday, April 15 starting at 3:00 p.m.
