Lacrosse Tops Old Westbury in Overtime, 10-9

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Cedar Crest College lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit to rally for a 9-8 overtime victory over the College at Old Westbury in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon.

The Panthers netted the lone goal of the first quarter on a marker from first-year Joann Williams to put Old Westbury up by a score of 1-0 at the end of one.

The home team registered two straight goals, which were scored by Williams and assisted by first-year Sarah Boubert (West Hempstead, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 3-0. Sophomore Kylah Demarest (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a tally with 2:30 to play before the half. Old Westbury tacked on another as Natalie Garcia found the back of the net to grow its margin to three, 4-1 at the half.

The third stanza featured eight total goals, four by each side. Demarest got things started for Cedar Crest. Boubert answered back for the Panthers. First-year Kadee Schrader (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) recorded the next one for the Falcons and then Williams put one home for Old Westbury to make the score 6-3 with 4:25 remaining in the frame. The Panthers outscored Cedar Crest, 3-2 over the rest of the quarter to carry an 8-5 advantage into the fourth. Senior Kayleigh Woomer (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) and Demarest had the goals for the Falcons.

After Boubert recorded a marker to push the margin to 9-5 when she found the back of the net just 53 seconds into the final quarter of regulation, the Falcons would finish on a 4-0 run to knot the score at nine with 8:50 to play. Demarest had three goals on the run while junior Abi Sipel (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) supplied the other.

With one minute remaining in overtime, junior Maddie Graham (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) set up Demarest for the game winner to make Cedar Crest victorious, 10-9.

First-year Irelyn Yoder (Wilmington, Del./Concord) picked up the win in goal for the Falcons, converting three saves in 35 minutes. Woomer recorded four saves in 30 minutes of action.

Senior Kathleen Mackey (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) made 15 saves in defeat for Old Westbury.

Graham had two assists, five ground balls, and three draw controls. Woomer recorded one goal, one ground ball. Sipel pitched in a goal, four ground balls, and five caused turnovers. Senior Adriana Hinkle (Palmerton, Pa./Homeschooled (played for Lehighton)) had six ground balls and one draw control. Sophomore Nicole Guzman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) tallied one ground ball. Sophomore Ellie Terranova (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) added two ground balls and one caused turnover. First-year Jessica Shults (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) scooped up two ground balls. Junior Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) had two ground balls. Junior Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) tallied two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Yoder closed the box score with one caused turnover.

Williams paced Old Westbury with six points on five goals and one assist.

Cedar Crest (7-3 overall) returns to action at Wilson College on Saturday, April 20 for a conference tilt at 1:00 p.m. Old Westbury (1-8 overall) resumes conference action on Saturday in a home game against Maritime College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
