Softball Upended By Rosemont

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team lost a pair of United East Conference-Skye Division contests at Rosemont College on Wednesday afternoon. The Ravens captured game one by a 7-0 final and then won game two, 13-4, in five innings.

Game One – Rosemont 7, Cedar Crest 0

The Ravens plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Graduate student Lauren Begg (New Hope, Pa.) scored the initial run of the contest when she crossed home on an error in the infield. Graduate student Allison Goodman (Bensalem, Pa.) followed with a base hit, which brought around classmate Emily Bingman (Mifflin County, Pa.). The last run came on a fly ball to left field from the bat of first-year Bailee Greise (Frostburg, Md.), which was deep enough to score graduate student Analisa Yoder (Belleville, Pa.) to take a 3-0 advantage.

After two scoreless frames, Rosemont pushed one run across in the fourth. First-year Shona Willoughby (Benalto, Alberta Canada) singled in Greise to increase the margin to 4-0.

The home team tacked on a pair in the fifth. Yoder crossed home on a fielder's choice and then Greise connected on a double, which plated junior Olivia Hamme (Mechanicsburg, Pa.).

The last tally came in the sixth when Bingman flew out to left field, which was deep enough to bring home Begg for the 7-0 final.

Begg was the winning pitcher for the Ravens. She tossed a shutout over seven innings and struck seven.

Senior Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) was credited with the loss for the Falcons. She gave up seven runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking three.

Begg led Rosemont at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

First-year Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior), junior Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro), and sophomore Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) each had a hit for Cedar Crest.

Game Two – Rosemont 13, Cedar Crest 4 (Five Innings)

Cedar Crest put up three runs in the top of the first inning on a bases-clearing double from the bat of junior Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter). The two-bagger brought around Mullen, Gronkowski, and sophomore Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to make the score 3-0.

The Ravens pulled even with a three-run bottom of the first. Bingman singled in Begg for the initial tally of the frame. Yoder then registered a two-run double to bring home Bingman and junior Kendyll Strohl (Northampton, Pa.) to tie the contest at three.

Rosemont re-gained the lead in the second frame when Strohl hit a grand slam to put the Ravens in front, 7-3.

The home team added another four runs in the third. Begg hit a two-run homer, Bingman scored on a single by Hamme, and then Yoder crossed home on a passed ball to increase the score to 11-3.

Rosemont recorded two more runs in the fourth to push the lead to 10, 13-3.

The Falcons got a run back in the fifth when senior Kristina Cagle (Pittsgrove, N.J./Arthur P. Schalick) recorded a single, which scored Kline for the 13-4 final.

Willoughby was the victorious pitcher, surrendering four runs on five hits. She fanned eight and walked two over five innings of work.

Junior BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was given the loss for Cedar Crest, giving up 13 runs on 14 hits while walking five.
