Martinez and Val Place to Lead Wrestling at NCWWC Region 2 Championships

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team finished eighth at the NCWWC Region 2 Championships on Sunday, hosted by East Stroudsburg University.

After a bye in the first round, sophomore Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) was defeated via fall by Daisey Hawkins of York College (Pa.) in the quarterfinals. In the consolation round following a bye, Martinez collected a win by fall (2:09) over Grace Molloy of Alvernia University. Martinez advanced to the semifinals of the consolation round, where she was taken down via fall by East Stroudsburg University's Alanna Barberio. In the fifth-place match, Martinez was defeated by Alexis Deagle of Marymount University by way of tech fall to finish sixth at 110.

First-year Arianna Gonzalez (Fallsburg, N.Y./Fallsburg Junior Senior) lost to Olivia Palmer by way of fall in the first round. After a bye in round one of the consolation round, Gonzalez was topped via fall (2:06) by Alana Durham of Alvernia University.

Following a bye in round one, first-year Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) earned a victory by decision, 6-2, over Danielle Ferrara of Alvernia University in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Val was defeated by East Stroudsburg University's Waverly Kanelong via fall. In the consolation semifinals, Val was topped by Marymount University's Alyssa Landrum by a 6-0 decision. Val was then taken down by tech fall in the fifth-place match by Isabella Devito of Lock Haven University to place sixth.

Sophomore Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) began the competition with a loss via fall to East Stroudsburg University's Zoe Gress. After a bye to start the consolation round, Stanford registered a win by decision over Ahlexa Montalvo of Misericordia University, 8-0. Stanford then closed action when she was defeated by Barbara Hartman of York College (Pa.) via fall.

Graduate student Rachel DeGiulio (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) started the day with a loss by tech fall to East Stroudsburg University's Gianna Amendola. She rebounded with a tech fall win over Madyson Hickman of Ursinus College to begin the consolation round. DeGiulio was then defeated by Delaware Valley University's Olivia Ball by tech fall.

First-year Symarah Drey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded a win by fall (1:53) over Kailey Remish of Misericordia University. In the quarterfinals, Drey was taken down by way of fall by East Stroudsburg University's Selina Moore. Drey then closed out the day with a loss by fall to Rebekah Patzke of York College (Pa.)

After a bye in the first round, senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) was defeated by Lock Haven University's Marissa Rumsey via fall in the quarterfinals. Sabir was then taken down by way of fall by Paisley Fox of Ursinus College.

Junior Draydon Charman (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) started the day with a loss via fall to Lock Haven University's Azariah Moore. After a bye in the round one of the consolation bracket, Charman was topped by fall (3:58) by Maya Landefeld of Misericordia University.

The match concludes the season for Cedar Crest, which finished with an 8-2 record in dual matches.
