Softball Sweeps Marywood

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College softball team picked up a pair of victories over Marywood University at Cynthia L. Blaschak Field on Friday afternoon. The Falcons held off the Pacers in game one, 6-4 and then cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.

Game One – Cedar Crest 6, Marywood 4

After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons plated four runs in the bottom of the second. First-year Jane Armbruster (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home senior Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) for the initial run. In the next at-bat, junior Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) connected on a two-run double to left field, sending first-years Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) and Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) around to score. The last tally of the frame came when Armbruster crossed home on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 4-0.

Marywood got a run back in the third on a base-hit down the left field line from first-year Marissa Hoffman (Zion Grove, Pa.). Sophomore Kat Davis (Throop, Pa.) crossed home on the play to cut the lead to three, 4-1.

Cedar Crest tacked on another run in the fourth as first-year Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) reached on an error in the outfield and the miscue allowed Ferraro to touch home plate to push the margin back to four, 5-1.

The teams traded runs in the sixth. Sophomore Marley Sarafinko (South Abington Township, Pa.) drove in junior Riley Marshall (Littleton, Colo.) with a base hit to right field and then Armbruster recorded the tally for the Falcons when she scored on a fielder's choice by Nadasi.

The Pacers brought home a pair in the seventh and loaded the bases, but were unable to get the tying run across.

First-year Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) was the winning pitcher in game one, striking out two and walking three in the complete-game victory.

First-year Brianna Voyer (Mineola, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking a pair and fanning three.

Kline went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Falcons. Ferraro also went 3-for-3 and added a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Four Marywood student-athletes finished game one with two hits apiece.

Game Two – Cedar Crest 12, Marywood 2 (Five Innings)

The Pacers recorded the first run of game two in the top of the first when Sarafinko drove in Marshall with a sacrifice fly to center field to put Marywood on top, 1-0.

Cedar Crest then registered 11 runs on five hits in the bottom of the first to break the game open. The Falcons sent 17 batters to the plate in the frame and scored five runs from bases-loaded walks and one from a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to push the score to 11-1.

Following a scoreless second, the home team brought another run home in the third on a double to left field from Mastillo, which allowed Kline to score.

Marywood registered one run in the top of the fifth to end the game with the 12-2 final in five innings.

First-year Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) secured the win in the circle, only allowing one run on seven hits over four innings. She also struck out a pair and walked one.

Sophomore Grace Lorah (Clarks Summit, Pa.) was credited with the loss for the Pacers, giving up five runs on one hit.

Kline went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Mastillo followed with a 2-for-3 game with three RBI and one run scored. First-year Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) and Ferraro closed out the hit column with one apiece.

Cedar Crest (4-12 overall) will have a quick turnaround as the Falcons head to Lehman College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 starting at 1:00 p.m. Marywood (4-10 overall) will next host Wilkes University on Sunday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m.
