Softball Powers Past Lehman in Sweep of Lightning

BRONX, N.Y. – The Cedar Crest College softball team secured its second-straight sweep, powering past Lehman College 10-0 and 14-4, both in mercy rule wins on Saturday afternoon.

Game One – Cedar Crest 10, Lehman 0 (Five Innings)

The Falcons got on the board with four runs in the first inning. First-year Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) drove in the first run of the game with a base hit to right field, bringing around sophomore Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior). First-year Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) then supplied a two-run single to left field, scoring Mastillo and junior Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township). Christopher came around to cross home on a double by junior Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) to make it a 4-0 score.

Cedar Crest registered a pair of runs in the third on a two-RBI single to left field from Gronkowski. The two-bagger scored first-year Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) along with Faw to increase the score to 6-0.

After a scoreless fourth, the Falcons pushed four more across in the fifth. First-year Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) scored on a base-hit by senior Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter). Kline then scored on an error and Hasert touched home on a wild pitch. Junior Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) drove in the final run of the game on a double to left field, plating Christopher for the 10-0 final.

Senior BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) picked up her first win on the season in the circle, striking out six in the shutout. Sophomore Jireh Espina (Phillipines) was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four.

Christopher went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead Cedar Crest. Hasert had a 2-for-4 game with two runs scored. Gronkowski was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Kline was the final Falcon with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Graduate student Lizbeth Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Lightning with two hits.

Game Two – Cedar Crest 14, Lehman 4 (Five Innings)

Lehman recorded the first run of the game in the home half of the first on a double steal. Sophomore Yudelis Pena (Bronx, N.Y.) crossed home on the play to make it 1-0.

The Falcons answered with a tally in the second when first-year Jane Armbruster (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) drove a ball out to right field, which was deep enough to score Christopher to knot the score at 1-1.

The Cedar Crest bats went crazy in the third inning, scoring 13 runs on eight hits, highlighted by a two-home run frame by Mastillo. She hit a two-run shot followed by a three-run bomb later in the inning as the Falcons extended the margin to 13, 14-1.

The Lightning scored a single run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to make it a 14-4 final.

First-year Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) registered the win in the circle for the Falcons, striking out four and walking five over five innings.

Espina was credited with the loss, giving up nine runs (six earned) on six hits.
