Softball Falls to Grove City, Spartanburg Methodist

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team lost two games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Tuesday, falling 6-1 to Grove City College and 8-0 to Spartanburg Methodist College.

Game One – Grove City 6, Cedar Crest 1

After a scoreless first two innings, Grove City pushed three runs across in the third. Senior Rachel Zona (New Castle, Pa.) started the scoring when she crossed home when sophomore Evelyn Montone (Allentown, Pa.) reached first on a fielding error. Sophomore Abigail Meadors (Warren, Ohio) drove in the next run with an infield single. Junior Noel Anthony (Clarion, Pa.) then came around to score on a wild pitch to increase the score to 3-0.

The Wolverines recorded three runs over the next two frames to stretch the margin to 6-0.

The Falcons scored its lone run of the contest in the sixth when senior Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) reached on a fielder's choice and then she came around to score on the same play for the 6-1 final.

Junior Kyla Campbell (Altoona, Pa.) picked up the victory in the circle for Grove City, only allowing one run on two hits while striking out five and walking one. First-year Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) struck out one and walked three over four innings of work in the loss for Cedar Crest.

Meadors, Campbell, and senior Annika Rinehart (McDonald, Pa.) had two hits apiece for the Wolverines.

First-years Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) and Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) each recorded a hit for the Falcons.

Game Two – Spartanburg Methodist 8, Cedar Crest 0 (Five Innings)

Following a scoreless first, the Pioneers scored four runs in the second inning. Sophomore Carson McCowan (Pauline, S.C.) singled through the left side to score junior Gracie Starnes (Wagener, S.C.). McCowan would score the next run on a fielding error in the outfield. Sophomore Lina Schwippert (Indian Land, S.C.) continued the frame with a base hit to right field, bringing around junior McKensleigh Parnell (Belton, S.C.). The final run of the inning came when sophomore Emma Kennington (Conway, S.C.) touched home on an infield base hit to make the score 4-0.

Spartanburg Methodist tacked on four more in the fourth. Junior Jacie Ross (Boiling Springs, S.C.) connected on a two-run single through the left side and would later score on a wild pitch. The final run came by way of an inside-the-park home run by junior Adriana Stump-Frias (Deltona, Fla.) for the 8-0 final score.

Sophomore Maddie Handy (Chesnee, S.C.) was credited with the win in the circle for the Pioneers, striking out three in three innings of work. First-year Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) was given the loss for Cedar Crest, surrendering four runs (two earned) on seven hits over three innings.

Ross, Stump-Frias, Starnes, and Kennington had two hits each for Spartanburg Methodist.

Adams and Mullen recorded a hit apiece for the Falcons.

Cedar Crest (0-6 overall) will have a day off on Wednesday and will face Albion College at 9:00 a.m. and Kenyon College at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
