LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team was defeated in a pair of games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday. The Falcons were topped by Albion College, 5-0, and were then edged by Kenyon College, 9-8.
Game One – Albion 5, Cedar Crest 0
The first five innings of the contest were scoreless as the teams were involved in a pitcher's duel.
The Britons pushed each of its five runs across in the sixth inning. Senior Parker Douglass (Fowlerville, Mich.) got things started the action with a base hit through the right side to bring home senior Hannah Petty (Brownstown, Mich.). Sophomore Jessie Anstandig (West Bloomfield, Mich.) scored on a throwing error. Sophomore Kayla Cole (Clarkston, Mich.) drove in a pair of runs with a triple to center field and then Cole came around to score on an infield single by first-year Natalie Kinney (Roscoe, Ill.) for the 5-0 score.
Sophomore Lilly Zaskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tossed a complete game shutout for Albion, striking out 13 while only allowing one hit.
First-year
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) gave up five runs (one earned) on nine hits to go along with a walk in seven innings in the loss.
Cole went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Britons.
Senior
Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) recorded the lone hit for the Falcons.
Game Two – Kenyon 9, Cedar Crest 8
Kenyon struck first with a pair of runs in the first frame. Junior Arianna Jalomo (Gardena, Calif.) connected on a double to left field to score sophomore Brooke Avila (Upland, Calif.). Jalomo would later cross home after first-year Emma Cashell (Hamilton, Mont.) reached on a fielder's choice.
The next three innings were scoreless and then Cedar Crest tallied seven runs in the top of the fifth. Senior
Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) began the scoring for the Falcons as she touched home after first-year
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) reached on an error. First-year
Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) supplied a base-hit to right center to bring around Nadasi. Kline then singled up the middle, which allowed Mastillo and junior
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to score. After a walk, first-year
Taylor Lawrence (Bethel, Pa./Tulpehocken) recorded a single to left center to bring around first-year
Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area). In her second at-bat of the frame, Mullen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Kline to touch home. Nadasi contributed to the final run of the inning as she drove a fly ball out to center field, plating junior
Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) on the sacrifice fly for the 7-2 advantage.
The Falcons added to its lead in the sixth when Ferraro connected on a triple down the left field line, scoring Mastillo to make it an 8-2 score.
The Owls pulled to within two, 8-6, with a four-run sixth inning.
Down 8-6 heading into the home half of the seventh, Kenyon registered three runs to grab the victory. Junior Madison Buckwalter (Phoenixville, Pa.) scored on a single up the middle from senior Natalya Delsante (Gilbert, Ariz.). Lynch then hit a single to center to bring home Delsante to tie the score at eight. The Owls delivered the game-winning run when Avila recorded a base-hit to center, sending first-year Morgan Gardner (Harrison, Ohio) home for the 9-8 win.
Allison McCutchen was the winning pitcher, tossing one inning and picking up one strikeout.
Acevedo was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on two hits.
Avila, Jalomo, and Buckwalter had three hits each for Kenyon.
Hasert went 3-for-5 with one run scored, Mastillo was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Kline was the final Falcon with double-digit hits, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Cedar Crest (0-8 overall) will close out its Spring Break trip on Friday, March 7 against Rosemont College at 9:00 a.m. and Hilbert College at 1:00 p.m.
