Softball Wins Big on Final Day of Spring Break Trip

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team picked up two wins at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Friday to close out its Spring Break trip. The Falcons took down Rosemont, 12-4, in five innings in game one and then defeated Hilbert College, 15-4 in five innings in game two.

Game One – Cedar Crest 12, Rosemont 4 (Five Innings)

The teams traded runs in the first inning as first-year Emilee Dickinson (Hillsboro, Ore.) doubled to left center to bring around senior Kendyll Strohl (Northampton, Pa.) to give Rosemont the 1-0 lead. The Falcons answered back in the home half of the first when a base-hit by junior Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) sent home senior Alex Mullen (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) to knot the score at one.

Cedar Crest created separation in the second inning, plating three runs. A single from first-year Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) scored sophomore Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) and then Hasert connected on a two-run triple to right center to extend the score to 4-1.

The Falcons tacked on four more in the third. With the bases loaded, Mullen started things with a bases-clearing triple to center field. Nadasi followed with a base knock up the middle, allowing Mullen to touch home to make it an 8-1 ball game.

Cedar Crest increased the lead to 10-1 with one swing of the bat in the fourth. With the outfield playing shallow, Gronkowski stepped to the plate and sent a ball over the head of the center fielder, sending home junior Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) and Gronkowski followed behind for the inside-the-park home run.

The Ravens scored three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Falcon margin to six, 10-4.

The Falcons pushed two more across in the fifth to end the contest. Junior Taylor Faw (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) scored after senior Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) connected on an infield single. The final run came when Hasert touched home after first-year Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) reached on a fielder's choice for the 12-4 win.

First-year Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) secured her first collegiate win in the circle, striking out four and walking two over five innings. Junior Josie Krieman (Raleigh, N.C.) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs on 13 hits while striking out three and walking three.

Mullen finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for Cedar Crest. Nadasi went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Hasert was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Kline registered a 2-for-4 game at the dish with an RBI and a run scored. Ferraro was the final Falcon with double-digit hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Game Two – Cedar Crest 15, Hilbert 4 (Five Innings)

It was the Falcons striking first in game two as Nadasi scored on a wild pitch to put Cedar Crest up 1-0.

Hilbert responded in the home half of the first when junior Emily Lacki (Blasdell, N.Y.) singled up the middle, which brought around junior Madison Esmond (Akron, N.Y.) to tie the score at 1-1.

The Falcons re-gained the advantage in the third when Kline doubled down the left field line, allowing first-year Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) to score to make the score 2-1.

Cedar Crest then broke the game open with a nine-run fourth frame.

Nadasi drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Christopher. Ferraro crossed home after Hasert reached on a fielding error. Kline followed with a three-run double to left center. First-year Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) supplied the next run with a single up the middle, plating Kline. Christopher and Mastillo crossed home on a two-RBI double from the bat of Ferraro and then Ferraro scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 10, 11-1.

The Falcons added to its margin in the fifth with four more runs. Nadasi singled up the middle to bring home classmate Taylor Lawrence (Bethel, Pa./Tulpehocken). Kline recorded a two-run double to right field and then Kline would later score the final run for Cedar Crest to stretch the score to 15-1.

The Hawks scored three runs in the fifth to end the game with the 15-4 final.

First-year Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) recorded her first collegiate win in the circle, striking out five over 4.1 innings of work.

Kline had a monster game at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored. Nadasi went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Ferraro was the last Falcon student-athlete with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Cedar Crest (2-8 overall) will return home and next host John Jay College on Saturday, March 15 in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
