Softball Tops SUNY Canton; Falls to Vermont State University Castleton in South Carolina

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team split its two games on Saturday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, securing a 6–3 victory over Canton before falling to Vermont State University Castleton in a high-scoring contest, 13-9.

Game One – Cedar Crest 6, SUNY Canton 3

In the first game against the Roos, the Falcons capitalized on a strong start, scoring four runs in the first inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Stock (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) set the stage with a single to left center, followed by a walk for classmate Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono). Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, leading to a single from senior Laney Ferraro (Philadelphia, Pa./New Foundations Charter) that brought Stock home. Mastillo scored on a passed ball, and Ferraro advanced to third. Sophomore Abby Adams (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) reached on a fielding error, allowing Ferraro to score, and sophomore Emily Christopher's (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) ground out to first brought Adams in, ending the inning with a 4–3 lead for Cedar Crest.

Despite the SUNY Canton early three-run inning, the Falcons' defense held firm, limiting the Roos to just five hits throughout the game. Cedar Crest extended its lead in the fifth inning when Mastillo hit an inside-the-park home run to right center. Ferraro walked and stole second, eventually scoring on Adams' sacrifice fly. The game concluded with a final score of 6–3 in favor of Cedar Crest.

Mastillo led her team with a strong performance, scoring two runs, hitting a home run, and adding two walks and a stolen base. Ferraro contributed significantly with two runs, one hit, and two stolen bases, also drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) delivered a complete game, pitching seven innings without allowing an earned run and striking out three batters, proving pivotal in the Falcons' success.

Game Two – Vermont State University Castleton 13, Cedar Crest 9

The game against Vermont State Castleton was high-scoring and saw Cedar Crest jump to an early lead with four runs in the first inning. Stock and Mastillo reached base, and Christopher's single drove in both. Ferraro scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) added another run with a sacrifice fly, putting Cedar Crest ahead 4-0.

The Falcons maintained their lead, extending it to 9-4 by the end of the third inning, thanks to a combination of errors by the Spartans and strong hitting from Cedar Crest, including a key double from sophomore Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) and a two-RBI single from Mastillo. However, Vermont State Castleton responded with a decisive seven-run fourth inning, taking control of the game.

Cedar Crest remained scoreless in the fourth and could not recover despite a strong offensive showing throughout the game, ending with a score of 13-9.

Mastillo again shone with three hits, including two RBI, while Stock drove in two runs and Christopher added two hits and one RBI.

On the pitching side, sophomore Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) threw six and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 runs on 12 hits, while Gray made a brief appearance, conceding one run.

Junior Madison Gould (Whitehall, N.Y.) excelled for Castleton, achieving three hits and two RBI, while sophomore Makayla Walsh's (Valatie, N.Y.) effectiveness in scoring situations contributed significantly to their offensive output.

Cedar Crest (3-3 overall) continues its Spring Break trip on Sunday, March 15 against the University of Mount Saint Vincent at 9:00 a.m. followed by a contest against Arcadia University at 11:00 a.m.
