LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — The Cedar Crest College softball team split a pair of games on Sunday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, clipping the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 5-4, before succumbing to Arcadia University, 8-1.
Game One – Cedar Crest 5, University of Mount Saint Vincent 4
The Falcons took an early lead with a run in the first inning and pulled ahead with a three-run third inning, capitalizing on Mount Saint Vincent's four errors. Despite the Dolphins' three-run rally in the fifth inning, Cedar Crest maintained its lead, securing the win with a decisive run in the sixth.
In the opening inning, sophomore
Kaitlyn Stock (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) singled and advanced to third base on classmate
Kylie Mastillo's (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) double. Stock then scored on sophomore
Abby Adams' (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1–1. In the third inning, the Falcons capitalized on errors and a key hit. Stock reached base on an error, and after Adams' single, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Sophomore
Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) delivered a crucial two-RBI triple, scoring Stock and Adams. Sophomore
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) added an RBI single, bringing Christopher home. Cedar Crest extended its lead to 4–1 after the third inning.
The University of Mount Saint Vincent responded in the fifth inning, tying the game with three runs scored on a combination of hits and a Falcons' error. However, Cedar Crest regained the lead in the sixth inning when junior
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Brooke Trentler (Whiteford, Md./North Harford), making it 5–4, the eventual final.
Stock made a notable impact by scoring two runs and drawing a walk. Mastillo contributed with two hits, including a double. Adams recorded a hit and an RBI, while Christopher showcased her ability by hitting a triple and driving in two runs.
Sophomore
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) led Cedar Crest in the circle with a four and two-thirds inning performance, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), and striking out six batters. Sophomore
Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) contributed significantly in relief, securing the win by pitching two and one-thirds scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
For the University of Mount Saint Vincent, Gracie Laukkanen started and pitched four innings, conceding seven hits and four runs (two earned).
Carmen Henderson led the Dolphins with four hits, including a triple, while Kayla O'Connor contributed significantly with two RBI.
Game Two – Arcadia 8, Cedar Crest 1
In the game against Arcadia, the Falcons fell with a final score of 8–1. Cedar Crest managed four hits, highlighted by an RBI in the third inning. The Knights capitalized on early momentum, scoring three runs in the first inning and sealing the win with a four-run seventh inning.
Arcadia took an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on two errors to score three unearned runs. Alexa Kozarski's single and subsequent advance on a throwing error brought home two runs, followed by her scoring on a wild pitch. By the end of the first inning, the Knights led 3–0.
The Falcons responded in the third inning when first-year
Madacyn Snyder (Wind Gap, Pa./Pen Argyl) singled and was advanced by Gronkowski's hit. Mastillo then delivered an RBI single up the middle, allowing Snyder to score. After the third inning, the score was 3–1 in favor of Arcadia.
In the sixth inning, the Knights added to their lead after Kiersten Murray, who pinch-hit for Dakota Fanelli, scored on a throwing error, extending their advantage to 4–1. Arcadia sealed the game with a strong seventh inning, recording four runs. Hits by Molly Delio , Kritzie Diaz-Rivera, and Sadie Drozdowski set the stage for a scoring burst, powered by Sofia Forbito's double and a sacrifice fly by Kozarski. The final score was 8–1, with the Knights securing the win.
Mastillo recorded one hit and drove in a run while contributing two assists defensively at shortstop. Snyder scored once and added a hit from her leadoff position. Gray pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing four earned runs over seven innings.
Lizie Lopez of Arcadia delivered a strong performance, pitching a complete game with seven innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits, and striking out four. Her efficiency was highlighted by a WHIP of 0.57, securing the win for Arcadia.
Cedar Crest (4-4 overall) concludes its Spring Break trip on Monday, March 16 against SUNY Poly at 9:00 a.m. followed by a matchup with St. Joseph's University Long Island at 11:00 a.m.
