Softball Splits Road Doubleheader at Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College softball team split their doubleheader against Cairn University on Tuesday afternoon at the Stillman Athletic Complex, recording an 8–2 victory in the first game before falling 7–2 in the second.

Game One – Cedar Crest 8, Cairn 2

The Falcons opened the scoring in the first inning when senior Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) reached first on an error and later scored on a single by sophomore Kylie Mastillo (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono), leading 1–0 after the first.

The third frame saw first-year Madacyn Snyder (Wind Gap, Pa./Pen Argyl) and sophomore Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) each single, setting up Mastillo's triple to left-center that brought home two runs. First-year Sabrena Espinosa (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) added an RBI single, and sophomore Kaitlyn Stock (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) capped the inning with a two-RBI single, ending the third with Cedar Crest holding a 6–0 lead.

The Highlanders responded in the fourth, narrowing the gap with two runs.

The Falcons added two more runs in the sixth, with Stock doubling and sophomore Jane Armbruster (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) scoring on a single by Christopher, concluding the game with a final score of 8–2.

For Cedar Crest, Hasert crossed home plate twice and stole one base, while Christopher recorded two hits and drove in two runs. Mastillo led with three RBI and a triple.
Sophomore Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) pitched a complete game for the Falcons, striking out seven batters over seven innings while allowing only two earned runs on eight hits.

For Cairn, first-year Aerynne Mays (Easton, Pa.) stood out with two RBI, and sophomore Korina Feliciano (Cherry Hill, N.J.) contributed two hits. Senior Sydney Wright (Souderton, Pa.) started for the Highlanders, pitching five and one-thirds innings and giving up seven earned runs.

Game Two – Cairn 7, Cedar Crest 2

The Highlanders set the tone with three runs in both the second and third innings, leading 6–0 by the end of three.

Cedar Crest finally responded in the fourth, with Snyder and Christopher both singling, allowing Espinosa to drive in two runs with a single to center field, but it was not enough to overcome Cairn.

For the Falcons, Christopher again recorded two hits and scored a run, while Espinosa added two RBI. Stock contributed with a hit and a double.

Sophomore Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) pitched four innings for Cedar Crest, allowing seven runs on seven hits with one strikeout, Gray delivered two innings of work with just one hit allowed, also fanning one.

Wright was dominant for the Highlanders, pitching a complete game and allowing only two earned runs while striking out a pair, earning her the win.

Cedar Crest (15-17 overall, 5-9 United East) remains on the road for its non-conference finale at Delaware Valley University on Thursday, April 23 starting at 3:00 p.m. Cairn (7-21 overall, 4-10 United East) hosts Wilson College in its regular season finale on Saturday, April 25 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
