DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College softball team was swept by Delaware Valley University in its non-conference finale on Thursday, falling 11-0 in the first game and 13-5 in the second.
Game One – Delaware Valley University 11, Cedar Crest 0 (Five Innings)
The Aggies quickly capitalized with senior Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa.) tripling and scoring on a wild pitch, ending the first inning with a 4–0 lead.
In the second inning, the Falcons' offensive efforts were highlighted by first-year
Madacyn Snyder's (Wind Gap, Pa./Pen Argyl) single, but the team was unable to score. Delaware Valley extended its lead with four additional runs, aided by errors, bringing the score to 8–0.
Cedar Crest was unable to generate offense in the third inning, while Delaware Valley maintained their 8–0 lead.
The fourth inning saw the Falcons go quietly, while the Aggies scored three runs, with first-year Laila Murray (Doylestown, Pa.) and senior Amelia Funston (Doylestown, Pa.) each contributing RBI, increasing the lead to 11–0.
In the fifth inning, Cedar Crest's attempts to rally were thwarted, as they were held scoreless. Delaware Valley's defense secured the final outs, ending the game with an 11–0 victory.
Snyder recorded two hits, contributing significantly to the Falcons' offense. Sophomore
Erin Gray (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) pitched a complete game, striking out three batters over four innings, but was charged with the loss, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.
For the Aggies, senior Morgan Mecham (Blackfoot, Idaho) was the standout, pitching four scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and six strikeouts, earning the win. First-year Tessa Fredericks (Easton, Pa.) excelled with two runs, two hits, and two RBI, while Murray matched those numbers, and senior Tori Bockrath (Collegeville, Pa.) also impressed with two runs, two hits, and two RBI.
Game Two – Delaware Valley 13, Cedar Crest 5 (Five Innings)
In the second game, Cedar Crest rallied with a three-run fourth inning and added two more runs in the fifth. However, Delaware Valley's strong start proved decisive, scoring five runs in the first inning and seven in the second, building a 12-0 lead after just two innings.
The Falcons got on the board in the fourth inning after senior
Natalie Hasert (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) singled and sophomore
Madison Nadasi (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) reached on a fielder's choice, with junior
Kate Gronkowski (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover Area Junior Senior) delivering a two-RBI triple to cut the deficit to 13-3.
In the fifth inning, Cedar Crest added two more runs, with Snyder and sophomore
Emily Christopher (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) scoring, although Christopher's run was unearned. Despite the late effort, the game concluded with the Aggies winning 13–5.
For the Falcons, Nadasi contributed one hit, one run, and one RBI. First-year
Sabrena Espinosa (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) added two hits and scored once, while Hasert recorded two hits and one run. Gronkowski tallied two RBI, including a triple.
Sophomore
Alexis Acevedo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) pitched four innings for Cedar Crest, allowing 13 runs on 15 hits, and took the loss, while striking out three and walking a pair1. For Delaware Valley, Junior Madison Karns (New Windsor, Md.) started the game with three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, while first-year Gemma Taggart (Ridley Park, Pa.) secured the win by conceding five runs on six hits in two innings.
Junior Jillian Collins (Selbyville, Del.) emerged as a key contributor for the Aggies, recording three hits and scoring two runs. Senior Madison Donnelly (Marlton, N.J.) and Fredericks each drove in two runs, with Fredericks adding a double and a walk. Murray showcased her offensive skills with three hits, two RBI, and a stolen base.
Cedar Crest (15-19 overall) conclude the regular season with a home doubleheader against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Friday, April 24 starting at 5:00 p.m., marking Senior Day. Delaware Valley (27-9 overall) wraps up the regular season on Friday on the road at King's College (Pa.) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
