LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College track & field team is in fourth place after the first day of the United East Conference Championship on Saturday at Keystone College, registering 38 points.
The Falcons had a pair in the 100-meter dash prelims with one advancing to the finals. Sophomore
Alyssa Maldonado (Delmar, Md./Parkland) punched her ticket to the finals on Sunday with a seventh-place finish and clocking a time of 13.85 seconds. Junior
Krishana Brooks (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) recorded a time of 14.40 seconds.
The Cedar Crest duo of first-year
Laila Stevenson (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and sophomore
Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) are headed to the finals in the 200-meter dash on Sunday. Stevenson took fourth, crossing the line in 27.22 seconds, followed by Val in eighth (27.67 seconds) in the prelims. Brooks also ran in the event and registered a time of 30.23 seconds.
The Falcons had three top-five finishers in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore
Giada Smith (Springtown, Pa./Palisades) took second with a time of 13:19.48. Graduate student
MacKayla Reed (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area Senior) finished fourth (14:26.03). Senior
Shayla Simek (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) rounded out the Cedar Crest participants in the event, crossing the finish line fifth with a time of 15:49.08.
In the 10,000-meter run, sophomore
Kasia Dos Santos (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) finished fifth in a time of 52:19.15.
The Falcons had three finish in the top ten of the hammer throw. Senior
Alana Connor (Manassas, Va./Charles J. Colgan) placed fifth (39.35 meters), senior
Bella Bozen (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) took seventh (33.73 meters), and first-year
Caterina Catizone (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) recorded a throw of 28.61 meters. Junior
Courtney Gibbons (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) finished 13
th with a mark of 27.20 meters.
Cedar Crest had three top-ten finishers in the javelin. Bozen collected a mark of 30.98 meters, placing third. Catizone followed behind in fifth (28.48 meters). Sophomore
Symarah Drey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) tallied an eighth-place finish with a throw of 25.27 meters.
Cedar Crest will conclude the Championships on Sunday, May 3 starting at 10:00 a.m.
