Allentown, PA – At home against undefeated Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Centenary, Cedar Crest endured a 21-5 loss on Monday.
Cedar Crest, still struggling with injuries in key positions, got a taste of what they had to look forward to quite quickly - Centenary scored the game's first goal within 12 seconds of the opening draw, and had three unanswered goals in the first minute.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 15-0 in the first half before Falcon senior Tara Fikes (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) netted her first goal on a Katie Brown (Catskill, NY/Catskill) feed with just under 5:00 to go until halftime. Brown then assisted freshman Olga Cauble (Concord, NH/Concord) for the Falcons' second goal of the half, but Centenary led at the break 17-2.
The Falcons played more aggressively in the second half, scoring three more goals and holding the Cyclones to just four. Although play in the second half was closer, Centenary still outshot Cedar Crest by nearly a four-to-one margin, and the Falcons had 25 turnovers.
Cedar Crest senior Kara Malysza (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) continued her new career at goalkeeper in place of the injured Kim Katsigianis (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) and had a great outing, recording 17 saves. Fikes had two goals, as did freshman Olga Cauble (Concord, NH/Concord). Junior Becca Lowe (Richmond, VA/James River) added the fifth.
Centenary's Meredith Bruce had a game-high six goals, five of which were in the first half, and Rebecca Balfour had four along with three assists.
The Falcons are now 0-4 and 0-2 in the CSAC, while Centenary improves to 5-0 and 1-0 in the conference. The Falcons' next game will be against non-conference foe Bryn Mawr on Immaculata at home on Thursday, March 22nd, at 4:30 p.m.
