Allentown, PA - The Cyclones of Centenary College, the team currently atop the CSAC softball leader board, blew into town on Wednesday and brought their namesake stormy weather with them.
Throughout two games in dreary conditions that included cold temps, wind, rain, and even hail, the Cyclones handled the Falcons with relative ease and headed home with wins in both ends of the doubleheader.
Cedar Crest had reason to be optimistic early in game one, as lead-off batter
Brianna Coleman (Carbondale, PA/Lakeland) reached on an error, advanced on a sacrifice by second batter
Tammy Touhsaent (Mertztown, PA/Kutztown Area), and was brought home by a double from
Shannon Wenner (Drums, PA/MMI Preparatory) in the three spot. That 1-2-3 precision allowed the Falcons to head to the second inning down just 2-1.
Little did they know that would be the extent of their offense, as Cyclone pitcher Roxanne Keenan held Cedar Crest to four hits and struck out five, while her teammates unleashed an offensive barrage that culminated in a 16-1 Centenary victory after five innings. Particularly crushing was an eight-run fifth inning that featured four doubles and two two-run home runs. Wenner and pitcher
Amanda Schaffer (Bath, PA/Northampton Area) each had doubles, and Schaffer allowed 13 hits and had one strikeout.
The only difference in the second game was the fact that the Cyclones front-loaded their offense, jumping out to an 8-0 lead after just two innings including a three-run homer by Cara Montferrat while the Falcons continued to struggle. Meagan Madsen was masterful in pitching a no hitter with two strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Falcon pitcher
Natalia Dial (Kannapolis, PA/Jesse C. Carson) allowed eight hits, just one walk, and fanned four in the outing.
Cedar Crest falls to 13-13 overall and 6-6 in the conference, while Centenary improves to 15-9 and 11-1 in the CSAC. The Falcons' next game will be on the road on at CSAC opponent Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday, April 14th at noon.
