Allentown, PA - Some exciting new additions to the team made for an entertaining home opener against Washington College, although the Shorewomen ultimately prevailed by a score of 5-0.
Skilled newcomers Gredia Sanchez (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers) and Courtney Long (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) looked particularly impressive, although the Falcons still suffered from a short bench and an underpowered offense. Washington scored twice in the first half and added three in the second, despite an amazing 19 saves by senior keeper Daniella Mendez (Cedar Grove, NJ/Montclair Kimberly Academy), and the Shorewomen managed 24 shots on goal to Cedar Crest's one, by Kim Barry (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack Area). Despite the numbers, Cedar Crest seemed as though they are just learning to play together and could be on the verge of a breakout.
The game was unexpectedly Washington's season opener, as an earlier game had to be canceled when the team bus caught fire, grabbing national headlines.
The Falcons begin the season 0-2 and still haven't begun Colonial States Athletic Conference play. Washington's is 1-0. Cedar Crest will look to improve things on the road against DeSales on Wednesday, September 5th, at 4:00 PM.
