Box Score
Gwynedd Valley, PA- The Cedar Crest women's soccer team was unable to continue their winning ways as they fell to Gwynedd Mercy University this past Saturday.
After their first conference win on Tuesday against Baptist Bible, the Falcons were hungry for another to put them in a better position for the conference tournament. However, the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins proved to be too strong, or perhaps on a high because it was their senior day.
The Griffins went up early in the game in the 10th minute, when they took advantage of a bouncing ball in the Falcons' box, and neatly placed it in the net, leaving goalkeeper Kristina Brandveen (Williamsburg,VA/Warhill High School) no chance. The Falcons lifted their heads up, and tried to find the net themselves, but unfortunately couldn't hold off the relentless Griffins attack, as they scored just ten minutes later in the 20th minute from a breakaway that left the Griffins player 1v1 with goalkeeper Brandveen. The Gwynedd Mercy team would go on to score three more times before the half, finishing it at 5-0.
The Falcons would have a much better second half, as they came out with their heads high, and appearing ready to lessen the goal difference. Unfortunately, a defensive miscommunication led to another Griffin goal early on in the second half. The Falcons continued to fight hard, trying to get on the scoreboard, and almost did when Allison Rittle (Fredericksburg, PA/Northern Lebanon) played a nice ball to Courtney Long (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) who sped it up the field, but unable to find the net. The Griffins went on to score once more before the end of the game to end scoring at 7-0 in favor of the home team.
After the game, coach Sarah Wolcott said "I thought we played a strong second half, but that wasn't enough to get us where we needed to go. Had we come out from the start the way we came out at the half, the score would have been very different, not to take anything away from Gwynedd Mercy, they had a tough team, and a very solid midfield, which proved to be too difficult for us to breakthrough."
With the loss, the Falcons fall to a 3-12-0 overall record, and 1-7-0 in CSAC play. The Falcons will be looking for their second conference win on the road against Keystone College at 3pm on Wednesday the 23rd.
