Exciting 2013 leaves Tennis Anxious for New Season

8/23/2014 5:37:00 PM

Allentown, PA

In one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory, the Cedar Crest College Tennis Team led all teams on campus during the 2013-2014 school year as they fought themselves in playoff contention.  Like all playoff pushes go, the Falcons would find themselves in a three way tie for the final spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's tennis playoff and would have to win out the rest of the season to avoid being eliminated by the competition.  Unfortunately for the Falcons, the clock would strike mid-night on the cinderella season as the Falcons would miss playoffs by just two wins.  However, the season did see the first Conference Rookie of the Year in recent memory for the Falcons as Jamie Wojciechowski (Archbald, PA/Valley View) would be voted Rookie of the Year by her fellow conference coaches.  The Falcons would also finish with a 5-5 record in the conference, a two win increase from the previous season.  The Falcons would be led by Wojciechowski who would finish 10-6 overall as a Freshman, Rakia Otoo (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Center for Science & Math) who would finish an impressive 9-7 individually, and Amy Frey (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) who wrapped up her senior season going 8-8 individually.

In doubles, Frey and Wojciechowski would team up and finish 9-7 in the #1 Doubles while then Junior Olga Cauble (Concord, NH/Concord) and then Sophomore Kyleen Sisson (Laceyville, PA/Elk Lake) would finish 8-7 in the #3 Doubles.

While the Falcons will miss Frey in the #1 Singles and Doubles spot they can't help but be excited about 2014.

Bringing in five new players Head Coach Lynn Pigliacampi certainly did her best to fill in leadership roles.  "I feel that we can be even better this season, we lost (Amy) Frey, and while it will be impossible to replace her leadership and attitude on the court we are happy to have her on our coaching staff".

On the other side of it all, Pigliacampi brought in three freshmen to help the Falcons make that push for the playoffs in 2014.
  • Taylor Doran (Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande) (Petaluma, CA): Taylor's playing experience and status as team captain, and winner of several team and coaches awards for her high school will add depth to the Falcons tennis team.
  • Sarah Babbie (Champlain, NY/Northeastern Clinton Central) (Champlain, NY): Brings four years of high school singles and doubles experience and match-toughness to the Cedar Crest tennis program. We are looking forward to seeing what she can do on the court.
  • Amy Webster (Wilkes-Barre, PA/E.L. Meyers ) (Wilkes Barre, PA): Falcon tennis will look for Amy to round out the line up providing depth and doubles match-play experience.

As for returners, the Falcons will see returning Rookie of the Year Jamie Wojciechowski (Archbald, PA/Valley View), Sophomores Emily Bryk (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and Rebekkah Parsons (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area), Junior Kyleen Sisson (Laceyville, PA/Elk Lake) and Seniors Rakia Otoo (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Center for Science & Math), Olga Cauble (Concord, NH/Concord), Maria Vincent (Georgetown, DE/Sussex Central) and Francheska Aquino (Coplay, PA/Whitehall).

The Falcons will open up the 2014 campaign on the road as they travel to Poultney Vermont first playing Green Mountain College on August 30th, then traveling to Johnson Vermont to play non-conference foe Johnson State College on the 31st.  The Falcons first conference opponent will the Mighty-Macs when they host Immaculata on September 13th.
