CAMDEN, N.J.---The Cedar Crest College tennis team opened their 2015 season with a tight win over non-conference Rutgers-Camden with a final score of 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.
"This was a nice opening match for us," stated Head Coach
Lynn Pigliacampi. "Our returneres battled some veteran players which will prepare them for conference play, and our freshman stepped up and won three of the five points for us showing they are up for any challenges this season will bring. I am really excited to see what this team will do."
The Falcons set the pace early as they took two doubles points to start. Sophomore
Taylor Doran (Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande) and senior
Kyleen Sisson (Laceyville, PA/Elk Lake) paired up at second doubles and were able to take their match in 8 straight games winning 8-0. Freshman
Kristina Litonjua (Easton, Pa./Easton Area High School) and
Stephanie Zuravnsky (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial High School) followed their lead taking third doubles with the same score, 8-0. Juniors
Jamie Wojciechowski (Archbald, PA/Valley View) and
Emily Bryk (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) would unfortunately fell at first doubles, 0-8.
The two teams would evenly split singles points as the first three places fell in favor of the of the Scarlet Raptors.
Sisson bounced back for the the Falcons as she took fourth singles, taking both sets from her opponent with the scores of, 6-1 and 6-1. Both
Litonjua, in the fifth spot, and
Zuravnsky, in the sixth, earned their first collegiate wins with a double bagel finish with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
The Falcons are set to take the courts on September 11 as they head to La Plume to take on conference foes Keystone College in their first Colonial State Athletic Conference match, the match is slated to start at 3:30 p.m..
