Softball Goes 1-1 in Third Day of Spring Training Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FL.---The Cedar Crest College softball team opened day three of The Spring Games with a 9-4 win over University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and falling later to Alfred University 11-3 on Tuesday evening.

The Falcons started game one with a single to left field by sophomore shortstop Kaylee Martinez (Hemet, CA/West Valley) who would then steal second. A walk and an error would load the bases for freshman designated hitter Nicole Ortiz-Siffel (/Southern Lehigh) who hit the runner in to take a 1-0 lead after the first.

Freshman outfielder Kelly Reading (Taunton, MA/Taunton) started the third inning with a walk and would later steal second and advancing to third on a routine ground ball. Freshman third basemen Aimee Sarboukh (Somerset, N.J./Bound Brook) singled up the middle to regain the lead 2-1.

The Falcons took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, as freshman pitcher Laura Rau (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) started things off with a single up the middle as sophomore first basemen Molly Schnaubelt (San Diego, CA/University City) followed up with a double up the middle. Reading knocked one down the right field line to score the run.

The top of the sixth began with Rau starting up the inning with another single this time to right field. Schnaubelt took a ball deep to right center for a double. Reading would load the bases for sophomore center fielder Lily Acosta (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty ) who singled but advance to second scoring two runs on the play. Martinez singled to center field and advanced to second on the play while scoring one run. Sarboukh grounded out to second but not before knocking in another run. Ortiz-Siffel singled to right field for the final run of the inning for an 8-1 lead.

In the last inning Rau singled up the middle, errors and a walk loaded the bases for Martinez who singled to left for an RBI. With tough defense and no runs scored in the bottom of the seventh inning the Falcons won 9-4.

In game two, the Falcons battled back from a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Schnaubelt singled to left field, Reading followed that up with a hit through the left side. Freshman outfielder Brittney Bonser (Kunkletown, Pa./Pleasent Valley) singled through the right side and advanced to second on an error on the play scoring both runners to cut the lead to 5-2. The Falcons scored a third run in the bottom of the third inning but that would be the last run for Cedar Crest.

Next up for is Penn State Behrend at 11:00 a.m. and Lebanon Valley College at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 in Clermont, Fla. at The Spring Games.
