SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Cedar Crest College soccer team beat the Sweet Briar Vixens 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
"We played with energy today, despite not being used to the heat and humidity," stated Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "It was a total team effort. We really did control the match, we just couldn't find the back of the net as often as we would have liked. Our girls worked hard for this W."
The Falcons began with an early lead as junior defender Caitlyn Mann (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) scored off of free kick. Mann placed her shot in the right spot by lobbing it over the goalie's head, putting the Falcons up 1-0. Senior midfielder Allison Rittle (Fredericksburg, PA/Northern Lebanon) also looked to score, but her shot was saved by the Vixen's goalie. Kassandra Miller (Fallington, Pa./Pensbury Senior ), a sophomore midfielder tallied three shots for the Falcons in the first half. In the 23rd minute of play, senior forward Kim Incontrera (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) shot the ball and missed the net by a few inches, hitting the crossbar. Junior midfielder Tara Irvin (Chalfont, Pa. /Central Bucks), junior forward Kari Vanderslice (Clementon, NJ/Highland Regional) and freshman forward Kelsey Kehm (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley ) all had shots that we just wide of the goal. Sophomore goalie Shelby Szoke (White Haven, Pa./Crestwood ) tallied one save for the Falcons, ending the first half 1-0.Â
Cedar Crest used their momentum from the first half to score early in the second. During the 57th minute of play, junior defender KiraRose Olsen (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) crossed the ball and Vanderslice was in the right place at the right time and headed the ball into the left corner of the goal, making the score 2-0. Sophomore forward Alexandra Zoda (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. /Roy C Ketcham Senior ) looked to capitalize, but her shot was blocked. Kehm shot again in the second half, but it was saved by the Sweet Briar's goalie. Freshman goalkeeper Cara Montanye (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush Central ) had two saves for the Falcons, ending the match 2-0.Â
The Falcons play next at home against non-conference Wilson College on September 14 at 4 P.M.
