Softball Sweeps Cairn

ALLENTOWN, Pa—The Cedar Crest College softball team picked up a pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference wins against Cairn University on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons picked up their 16 th and 17 th win in game one with a final score of 6-0, they won the second game 15-3.

The first game started strong for the Falcons as they took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Britney Bonser was walked to start the game, sophomore center fielder Kelly Reading (Taunton, MA/Taunton) singled to the pitcher on a bunt, an error loaded the bases for a sacrifice fly to right field by designated player Molly Schnaubelt (San Diego, CA/University City) to score the first run.

Tight defense got the Falcons back to the plate to try and score more runs. Freshman third basemen Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) doubled to right field for the first at bat. Junior right fielder Jackie Gallagher (Fort Worth, TX/Keller Central ) double to right field to score Horning. Bonser hit a triple to right center for an RBI and was score on a pop up to take a 4-0 lead. Junior short stop Kaylee Martinez (Hemet, CA/West Valley) reached first with a nicely laid bunt in front of the plate and later scored on a hit to left field by Schnaubelt taking 5-0 lead to end the bottom of the second.

The Falcons scored the sixth run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Horning was walked for the first base runner. Freshman second baseman Courtney Constable (East Bangor, PA/Bangor Area) singled up the middle while both runner advanced a base on a wild pitch. The run scored on a groundball to the first basemen who made the play to the second baseman at first to win the game 6-0. Sophomore pitcher Laura Rau (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) earned her ninth win, striking out five batters in five innings allowing only one hit. Freshman pitcher Breanna Young (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) finished the final two innings with one strikeout.

The second game had the Falcons recovering from a 1-0 deficit. A single by Bonser to left center started things for the Falcons. A double to right center by Martinez scored the run to tie things. Schnaubelt took one to left center that even a diving defender couldn't make the play to take the lead 2-1. Gallagher started the inning with a walk and a single through the right side by Reading score the run to tie things at three to end the bottom of second.

Back-to-back doubles gave the Falcons the lead in the third inning, the first to center field by Martinez the next was Schnaubelt to right field for an RBI. Rau, who was in the designated player position knocked in the next run when an error occurred. Horning singled to left field for an RBI while Young, playing first this game, hit a single. With runners in scoring position Bonser singled, and advanced on an outfield error while both runs scored for an 8-3 lead. Reading hit a single to right field for an RBI to take a 9-3 lead to end the bottom of the third.

The fifth inning gave the Falcons a boost with four runs, starting the inning was Schnaubelt with a single down the left field line. An error on third allowed the ball to get to left field put Rau on first. Young was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Gallagher ho singled up the middle for two runs. Runners in scoring position for Bonser, who ripped a hit up the middle for two more runs. Two batters were walked to load the bases for Schnaubelt to double to center field taking a 15-3 lead for the win. Freshman pitcher Kendra Pekurny earned her sixth win with one strikeout as junior pitcher April Daly (Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross ) finished the game.

The next game for Cedar Crest is on Friday, April 14 as they travel to non-conference Albright College with the double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
