Box Score 2 ALLENTOWN, Pa.--- The Cedar Crest College softball team extended their win streak on Saturday afternoon as they split with Gwynedd Mercy University on Senior Day. The Falcons lost the first game in a tight 3-2 game, but later bounced back to win 8-6 to finish the regular season in fifth place, one place higher than last year to earn the team their second post-season appearance in school history.
Both teams faced two tough innings before the Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as sophomore center fielder Kelly Reading (Taunton, MA/Taunton) singled up the middle to get the team a base runner. Junior shortstop Kaylee Martinez (Hemet, CA/West Valley) doubled to left center advancing the runner to third. Junior designated player/catcher Molly Schnabelt singled up the middle scoring both runs for the lead.
The Falcons only had three more hits after this inning, and due to three hits by the Griffins in the sixth inning they took 3-2 lead that never returned back to the home team.
Cedar Crest trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the second inning of game two, Schnaubelt scored the first run with her third homerun of the year over center field. Freshman third basemen Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) wasn't to be out done, she also homered over the center field fence to take the lead 2-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, freshman second basemen Courtney Constable (East Bangor, PA/Bangor Area) got on base due to a throwing error that allowed her to advance to second, and she later stole third. The next three batters all hit for singles to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead. The first single was by Martinez through the left side to score the first run. The next was by Schnaubelt, also through the left side, to advance the runner while sophomore designated player Aimee Sarboukh (Somerset, N.J./Bound Brook) singled up the middle for an RBI.
Junior right fielder Jackie Gallagher (Fort Worth, TX/Keller Central ) started the fourth inning off with a single through the left side, later advancing to second on a sac bunt by Constable. A single to right field by Reading scored the run. Sophomore left fielder Brittney Bonser (Kunkletown, Pa./Pleasent Valley) singled through the left side to advance the runner. Martinez single to the second basemen scoring another run to take the lead 6-2.
Cedar Crest tacked on another run in the fifth inning as Sarboukh doubled to center field, and later reached third on a passed ball. Horning grounded out on the play, but not before the run scored making the score 7-4.
Martinez hit her 17th double in the sixth inning to tie Schnaubelt for second place in the school record book for doubles in a season this year. On the next play the second basemen miss played a routine ground ball to let the runner reach first as well as score the run as the team took a 8-6 lead. Ending on a double play the Falcons held on to play another day.
