Soccer Battles Gothic Knights

9/12/2017 9:17:00 PM

Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa.---The Cedar Crest soccer team lost a hard fought battle against non-conference New Jersey City University, 1-0, under the lights on Tuesday afternoon.

"This was a tough one," stated Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "We worked and fought so hard for 90 minutes. It was sheer battle. I'm proud of the tenacity and enthusiasm we showed, which is why it's such a disappointing loss. I felt like we really deserved this one, but that's the way the ball rolls in soccer sometimes. You can fight for everything and still come up short. The guts were showed today, though, is super encouraging. And we're focusing now on bringing this same intensity Saturday. Also, Morgan came up big multiple times. She energized the team and breathed life into us the entire match. She was wall back there."

Cedar Crest managed to get a corner kick 20 minutes into the game for their first attacking piece, but they weren't able to capitalize. While on the defensive side junior goalkeeper Morgan Maddock (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial High School) made six saves to head into half time with an even slate, 0-0.

Maddock came up with another save to begin the second half, after eight minutes the team managed their way down field, finding freshman forward Erika D'Angelo (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial ) who ripped a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper. Freshman forward Daria Warner (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) got her first attempt off 13 minutes into the second half, but it went just high off frame. Warner headed a cross put into the 18 yard box the next time she was in front of the goal, missing just wide. D'Angelo fired her next shot that was off frame flying wide. A foul on NJCU led to a set piece that senior Katia Olsen (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) looked to finish with her head, but the keeper was there to make the save. Junior midfielder Kassandra Miller (Fallington, Pa./Pensbury Senior ) took a deep shot to possibly float one in over the keepers head while it looked possible the shot went slight over the net. A foul inside the box gave the Gothic Knights to capitalize, scoring the lone goal of the match on a penalty kick. Later, back-to-back corner kicks for the Falcons who were in the hunt to equalize were met with a blocked and a wide shot.  Warner fired her final shot that missed wide of the goal.

The next game for the Falcons is on Saturday, September 16 against Sweet Briar at 1:30 p.m. on the turf.
