Cedar Crest Clinches Playoff Berth with Game 1 Victory over Cairn, Sweeps Highlanders to Conclude Regular Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LANGHORNE, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College softball team swept Cairn University Monday evening to clinch a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoff berth for the third straight year. The Falcons only needed 5 inning for game one, earning their playoff spot with a 10-2 victory. Game two ended with the Black and Yellow defeating the Highlanders 11-3 to put their overall record at 19-17 and CSAC record at 12-10.

In game one, each team put a run on the board in the 1st inning, moving into the 2nd, tied at 1-1.  Cedar Crest would plate three runners in the second inning and add another in the 4th to extend their lead to 5-1. Cairn would score one in the bottom of the 4th to cut the Falcons lead to 5-2. Cedar Crest scored three in the 4th and two more runs in the 5th to put the score at 10-2 and would end game one in 5 innings, clinching their playoff spot.

Two Falcons were perfect from the plate in game one, senior catcher Molly Schnaubelt (San Diego, CA/University City) went 3-for-3 and freshman first baseman Patricia Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) ended 4-for-4. Schnaubelt drove in two runs and scored two of her own while Dalton plated three and scored once. Senior shortstop Kaylee Martinez (Hemet, CA/West Valley), sophomore third baseman Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman second baseman Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) each contributed two hits in the game. Martinez and Horning drove in two runs a piece with Tremblay crossing the plate once. Senior designated player Jackie Gallagher (Fort Worth, TX/Keller Central ) and sophomore Courtney Constable (East Bangor, PA/Bangor Area) both got a hit in game one, both scoring once and Constable getting an RBI as well.

In circle in game one was sophomore Kendra Pekurny (Kunkletown, PA/Palmerton Area), who pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one earned run and three hits and striking out three Highlanders. Pekurny now has a record of 7-6 on the year.

Game two was scoreless after 4 innings of play before the Falcons were able to get on the board. Cedar Crest scored three in the 5th and then put up 6 runs in the top of the 6th to put the lead at 9-0. Cairn managed to score three in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 9-2 heading to the 7th inning. The Black and Yellow would add two more runs to extend the lead to 11-3 and would win game two to end the regular season.

Martinez contributed four hits in five at bats, bringing in six RBIs and scored two runs of her own. Three Falcons ended game two with two hits, Horning, Tremblay and freshman left fielder Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland). Horning added an RBI with Tremblay scoring a run while Heller scored twice and scored an RBI. Junior right fielder Aimee Sarboukh (Somerset, N.J./Bound Brook) and Constable each reached base once, each scoring twice and Constable plating a runner.

Starting in the circle in game two was sophomore Breanna Young (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area), who pitched a complete game, 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs, eight hits and three strikeouts. Young received the win in the decision and put her season record at 10-9.

The Falcons are heading to Immaculata University for the First Round of the CSAC Playoffs with first-pitch of the single-elimination game at 4:00 PM.
