Softball walks-off in extras in Game 1, Splits with Centenary in CSAC play

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest Softball squad split a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader with Centenary University on Wednesday evening on Cynthia L. Blaschak Field. The Falcons claimed Game 1, 5-4, with a walk-off bunt in the bottom of the 8th, then suffered a 6-8 loss in Game 2. Cedar Crest moves to 14-19 overall and 6-2 in CSAC action.

Centenary scored two runs in the 1st to take the 0-2 lead into the 4th inning, before the Black and Yellow cut the deficit in half, 1-2. The Cyclones would add another run in the 5th to push the lead back to two, 1-3, before the Falcons would tie the game with one swing of the bat with a two-run double, knotting things up at 3-3. Centenary would regain the lead with a double in the 7th, putting the score at 3-4. Cedar Crest would tie it yet again, 4-4 to force extra innings. There were Falcons on second and third as sophomore Danielle Krispin (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) dropped down a bunt that had the pinch-runner, freshman Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), slide into home to win the game, 5-4.

Sophomore Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) turned in a perfect 4-for-4 performance, doubling twice in the game. Junior Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fl./Osceola) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Four other Falcons recorded hits in the victory, including freshman Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) and Krispin, who each had doubles.

Junior Breanna Young (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) started in the circle for the Black and Yellow, who threw 6.2 innings, allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Junior Kendra Pekurny (Kunkletown, PA/Palmerton Area) entered the game in the 7th and recorded the final four outs for Cedar Crest, pitching 1.1 innings. Pekurny faced five batters and did not give up a hit to earn the win, putting her at 2-3 on the season.

After a scoreless 1st inning, the Falcons would post a four-run 2nd inning to take the 4-0 lead. Centenary would counter with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the 4th, to tie it at 4-all, but Cedar Crest would plate one Falcon after a triple by junior Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty). The Cyclones pounded out four more runs in the 5th to take a three-run lead, 5-8. Adding one run in the bottom half of the 5th would be the last run of the game as the Falcons fall to Centenary, 6-8.

Senior Aimee Sarboukh (South Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), Krispin and VanBuskirk all recorded two-hit games in the loss. Krispin doubled twice as her and Sarboukh each plated two runs and scored a run.  VanBuskirk doubled and scored one run of her own. Four other Falcons reached with base-hits, including Horning's RBI triple.

Freshman Skyler Bilous (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) toed the rubber in Game 2, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in the 23 batters she faced. Pekurny entered the game in relief and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run to score off of just one hit and a strikeout. Bilous received the loss in the decision, evening her record at 7-7 on the year.

Cedar Crest is off for a full-week and will pick back up with a CSAC doubleheader on the road at Wilson College on Wednesday, April 24. First-pitch is slated for 3:00 PM.
