Softball splits with Cairn to end regular season, clinches CSAC playoff berth

LANGHORNE, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Softball squad split their last pair of games in the 2019 campaign, falling 1-3 in Game 1, then taking Game 2, 3-2 against Cairn University on Saturday evening.

The Falcons and Highlanders played two scoreless innings before Cairn put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Cedar Crest would answer with a run of their own in the sixth inning, but not enough to mount a comeback. The Black and Yellow would drop Game 1 by a score of 1-3.

Cedar Crest had five base hits and had one run cross the plate. Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fl./Osceola) scored the lone Falcon run and swiped two bases in the game.

Kendra Pekurny (Kunkletown, PA/Palmerton Area) got the ball and the start in the circle for the Black and Yellow, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on just two hits. Pekurny faced 17 batters before Skyler Bilous (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) entered in relief and threw 2.2 innings, not allowing a hit or run in the nine batters she went up against. Pekurny ultimately received the loss in the decision, putting her record at 2-4 on the year.

The Falcons would strike first in Game 2 with a double by Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) through the left side of the infield that scored a runner from second. Cairn would quickly counter and tie the game up at 1-1 after a RBI single. In the second, Cedar Crest would regain the lead off of a Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) single to right, taking a 2-1 lead. The Black and Yellow would add another in the fifth inning with VanBuskirk finding the gap in left-center field, doubling for a second time and plating Santaniello to take a 3-1 lead. Cairn would cut the lead back to one on an error, but the Falcons would hang on to their lead and claim Game 2, 3-2.

Three Falcons, Aimee Sarboukh (South Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), VanBuskirk and Heller recorded two hits each. Sarboukh went 2-for-3 and scored a run while VanBuskirk doubled twice in her 2-for-4 performance, driving in two RBIs. Heller also went 2-for-4, plating a run and scoring one of her own. Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) reached base with a double as Patricia Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) recorded a base hit and Santaniello got on base and scored a run for the Black and Yellow.

Breanna Young (Easton, Pa./Wilson Area) started Game 2 in the circle for Cedar Crest and threw for 5.0+ innings, giving up two unearned runs of four hits and one strikeout. Young went up against 25 batters before Lillian Boltz (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) entered the game for the final 2.0 innings of work, not allowing a run of hit in the six batters she faced. Young received the win in the decision, improving to 6-9 on the year and Boltz earned the save, her second of the season.

Cedar Crest ends the regular season with a 17-22 overall record and a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) record of 9-5, which officially clinches a spot in the CSAC Playoffs taking place next weekend. Wilson College clinched the number-one seed and will host the tournament, while the Falcons wait to see where they will be seeded, either the three or four-seed.
