Falcons register 25 hits over two games on Wednesday.

Strong Offense Carries Softball to Pair of Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Cedar Crest College softball team earned a pair of victories on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, both in mercy run-rule efforts. The Falcons defeated Gwynedd Mercy University, 13-4, in six innings and then came away with a 12-2 win over Eureka College to finish the day.

Game One – Cedar Crest 13, Gwynedd Mercy 4 (Six innings)

Cedar Crest was the first to score as they tallied one run in the top of the first after an RBI double to left field from graduate student Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola). The two-bagger scored classmate Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) to give the Falcons the 1-0 advantage.

Gwynedd Mercy tied the contest in the home-half of the first on a double to left field from junior Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and later took the lead when Carney crossed home on a single through the right side from sophomore Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.).

Cedar Crest pulled even with the Griffins in the second after senior Rachel Savini (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) grounded out to the shortstop with two Falcons on base, plating classmate Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge).

Cedar Crest blew the game open in the next inning, recording four runs. Freshman Alexis Kline (Allentown, Pa./Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter) scored after a fielding error and senior Reilly Mateljan (Friedens, Pa./Somerset Area) delivered a bases-clearing double to stretch the lead to 6-2.

Gwynedd Mercy got one of those runs back in the following half-inning as sophomore Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) singled through the left side, scoring Carney.

The Falcons added two more in the fourth on a single through the left side from Santaniello. Kline and graduate student Ashley Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) crossed home on the play to increase the score to 8-3.

Cedar Crest kept the bats going in the sixth, tallying five runs five runs on five hits to stretch the lead to 10, 13-3.

The Griffins got on the board once more in the contest, as Carney scored on a wild pitch for the 13-4 final.

Mateljan went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with three RBI to pace the Falcons. Santaniello finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Heller was the final Falcon to register multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) secured the win in the circle for Cedar Crest. She tossed six innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits to go along with four strikeouts.

Focht was tagged with the loss for Gwynedd Mercy. She surrendered 11 runs on 11 hits. In addition, Focht walked four and struck out one.

Game Two – Cedar Crest 12, Eureka 2 (Five Innings)

Eureka was the first to strike, registering both of their runs in the top of the first, coming by way of sacrifice flies. Freshman Mackenzie Daniels (Monticello, Ill.) flew out center field to drive in senior Raelyn Payne (Lexington, Ill.) while sophomore Bria Wessel (Peoria, Ill.) had a sacrifice fly of her own to send sophomore Tressa Grisham (Morton, Ill.) home.

Cedar Crest continued its strong offensive showing in the first inning, plating four runs. Kline drove in Heller on a single through the left side for the opening run of the contest for the Falcons. Santaniello sent Kline home on an RBI groundout while junior Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Mateljan drove in runs to give Cedar Crest the 4-2 advantage.

The Falcons registered another four runs in the second to build an 8-2 advantage. Tremblay got things started with a two-RBI double to left center, bringing around Heller and Savini. Later in the frame, Tremblay came around to score on a fielding error and VanBuskirk doubled to right field, plating Snyder.

Tremblay was back in the action in the third when she drove in Savini on a single to right field. The final two runs of the inning came by way of a fielding error in the outfield, scoring Tremblay and Lankford.

Savini delivered the final tally on the afternoon for the Falcons with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mullen for the 12-2 score.

VanBuskirk guided Cedar Crest at the dish, going a perfect 3-for-3. Heller and Savini also finished with multiple-hit efforts.

Freshman BB Aquila (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) picked up her first career win the circle. She pitched five innings and gave up two runs on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Cedar Crest (4-3 overall) will conclude its Spring Break trip tomorrow, Thursday, March 10 with games against Thiel College (9:30 a.m.) and Norwich University (11:30 a.m.).
