Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team was defeated by Cairn University in a 9-0 final on Monday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match at home.
The Highlanders started the match with a sweep of doubles play. Senior Paige Kemper (Lancaster, Pa.) and sophomore Ersy Neal (Wayne, Pa.) topped junior
Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) and senior
Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), 8-1, at first doubles. Junior Rachel Campbell-Robertson (Richmond, Va.) and Rebekah Hepp took down senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and first-year
Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) at second doubles, 8-4. Cairn completed the sweep when Abby Horning (St. Adamstown, Pz.) and Gabriella Hurst (Stevens, Pa.) teamed up for an 8-0 win at third doubles over sophomore Corrine O'Connor and junior
Megan Fiedler (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior), 8-0.
The Highlanders went onto take all six singles matches. Kemper defeated Franzone at No. 1 singles in a 6-0, 6-1 final. Campbell-Robertson beat Wolf at second singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Neal took down Schultz at the No. 3 spot (6-0, 6-1). Horning got by O'Connor at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-0 win while Hurst won at No. 6 over Fiedler 6-0 and 6-0.
The closest match of the day came at the No. 4 spot between Hepp and Browning. Browning won the first set 6-3. Hepp then responded with a 6-1 second-set victory. Hepp then went onto take the tiebreak, 10-6.
Cedar Crest (0-5, 0-1 CSAC) will travel to Clarks Summit University for a conference match on Wednesday April 5 at 1:30 p.m. Cairn (4-4, 1-0 CSAC) will return to the court on Friday, April 14 in a road match at Bryn Athyn. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
