Box Score SOUTH ABINGTON, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team was defeated by Clarks Summit University in a 7-2 final in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match on Wednesday afternoon at the Birchwood Tennis Club.
The Lady Defenders won two of the three doubles matches to take the early advantage. The Falcons' junior pair of
Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) and
Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) captured the point with an 8-5 first doubles win over junior Melanie Stabler (Lockport, N.Y.) and sophomore Naomi Sadowitz (Miyakonojo, Japan). Junior Ksenya Larsen-Sorterup (Damariscotta, Maine.) and senior Heidi Floyd (Bath, Pa.) topped senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and first-year
Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. Clarks Summit grabbed the 2-1 lead after seniors Alison Aten (Streetsboro, Ohio) and Katie McKee (Buffalo, N.Y.) took down sophomore Corrine O'Connor and senior
Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) at third doubles, 8-1.
In singles play, Sadowitz blanked Spagnola at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, and 6-0. Aten beat Wolf at third singles by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores. Schultz fell to Stabler at No. 5 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Natasha Karp won at No. 6 over O'Connor while Larsen-Sorterup pulled out a three-set victory over Browning (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) at fourth singles.
The Falcons earned its lone singles point at No. 2 when Franzone got by Floyd with scores of 7-6, 6-2.
Cedar Crest (0-6 overall, 0-2 CSAC) will return to the court on Saturday, April 8 in a road match at Saint Elizabeth University starting at 10:00 a.m. Clarks Summit will be off this weekend and play next on Tuesday, April 11 against Notre Dame of Maryland University.
