Tennis Secures First Win of Season With 7-2 Triumph at Saint Elizabeth

Box Score MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team secured its first win of the season with a 7-2 triumph over Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday morning in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest.

The Falcons grabbed a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Juniors Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) teamed up for an 8-3 win over sophomore Dayanna Vera (Bloomfield, N.J.) and Melissa Evers at the No. 1 spot. Senior Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and first-year Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) topped first-year Keyera Williams (Orange, N.J.) and senior Lauren Griesmeyer (Phillipsburg, N.J.) at second doubles, 8-2. The Eagles salvaged a point at No. 3 doubles when sophomore Pierreline Pierre (Elmont, N.Y.) and Gianna Zappa got by sophomore Corinne O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and junior Megan Fiedler (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) in an 8-3 final.

Cedar Crest was victorious in five of its singles matches to secure the win, three of which went the distance. Spagnola edged Evers at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Franzone pulled out the victory at second singles, needing a third-set super tiebreak to decide the match. After dropping the opening set by a 6-3 score, Franzone rallied for a 6-4 second-set win and then got by in the tiebreak, 10-6. Browning defeated Williams at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Senior Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also needed three sets to decide her match at fifth singles. After falling 6-4 in the first set, she responded with identical 6-4 scores in the second and third sets to capture the point. Fiedler closed out the points for the Falcons with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Pierre at the No. 6 slot.

The Eagles salvaged its lone point when Griesmeyer defeated Wolf at third singles by 6-1, 6-4 scores.

Cedar Crest (1-5 overall, 1-2 CSAC) returns to Allentown to host Bryn Athyn College in its next match on Thursday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m. Saint Elizabeth (0-5 overall, 0-1 CSAC) travels to Kean University for its match, which will take place on Monday, April 10 at 5:30 p.m.
