Falcons Tie in Double OT

9/6/2014 7:15:00 PM

Box Score

Allentown, PA- The Cedar Crest Falcon soccer tournament kicked off today, with the Falcons ending their matchup with a tie against Lehman College with each team scoring one goal a piece.

The Falcons started the first half strong, trying to ignore the scorching heat, as they ran at the Lehman defense constantly. Leading goal scorer Courtney Long (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh), found herself in goal scoring contention many times at the beginning of the game, but was unable to net any of these opportunities. The first goal would come from the foot of a Lehman player in the 12th minute, as the Falcons had a slight misunderstanding and the Lehman attacker made the Falcons pay as she slotted the ball right by freshman goalkeeper Nalani Velasquez (Howell, NJ/Howell). The Falcons would strike back and equalize in the 26th minute, when Long neatly passed a ball to Sophomore Allison Rittle (Fredericksburg, PA/Northern Lebanon) who slotted it in the right bottom corner past the Lehman goalkeeper.

The second half would look much like the first as the Falcons dominated possession and constantly kept running at the Lehman defense, and taking countless shots. This half however would end scoreless, despite the Falcon domination. The game would then go to overtime, where the Falcons continued in their shooting ways but unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities, causing the game to end in a tie. The Falcons ended the game outshooting the opponents 17-8.

After the game coach, Sarah Wolcott said "Even though we didn't get the result we wanted we played a hard fought match. I felt like we controlled a majority of play, so the tie is definitely disheartening. We had a ton of opportunities- we just couldn't find the back of the net. This was probably the best soccer we've played since I've been here, so we just need to take the momentum from our play, forge that we didn't get the "W", and move on. Allison Rittle (Fredericksburg, PA/Northern Lebanon) stepped up and had a great goal. I feel like today was a breakout performance for us. Kim Barry (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack Area), again, exemplified what it is to be a captain. She gutted out a potentially broken wrist and played one heck of a game.

With the tie the Falcons record is now 1-1-1, and they will be back in action tomorrow as they close the Cedar Crest Soccer Tournament at 2pm against The City College of New York.
