Falcons win first conference competition in a double-dual meet

Washington, D.C. – The Cedar Crest College Swim and Dive team defeated both the Cazenovia Wildcats and the Gallaudet Bison in their first double-dual conference meet on Saturday, November 16th. The Falcon won 126-69 against Gallaudet and 99-94 against Cazenovia. The Falcons are currently 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference competition.

The first event of the meet was the 200-yard medley relay. Zaria Berry (Maplewood, N.J. /Columbia High School ), Ember Kriner (Lancaster, Pa ), Nyla Boulware (Whitehall Pa./Whitehall) and Cassandra Reijgers (Hollis, N.H./Hollis Brookline) finished with a time of 2:29.60. Freshman, Abbey Mower (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional ), was the lone Falcon swimming the 1000-yard freestyle. Once again, she dominated the competition finishing in first place with a time of 12:35.31, only 10-second shy of breaking the school record in this event.

Mackenzie Inacker (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) was the first to touch the wall in the 200-yard freestyle finishing in 2:21.18 with teammate Berry taking third with a time of 2:26.24. Inacker and Berry finished in first and second place against Gallaudet. For the 50-yard freestyle Brenna Desborough (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and Audra Bratis (Doylestown, Pa/PA Leadership Charter School ) finished in third and fourth place with times of 34.95 and 35.56 respectively.

Freshman, Rachael Alulis (Whitehall, Pa ) had an impressive day placing first in all three of her events today. Her first event was the 200-yard individual medley where she finished with a time of time 2:35.12. Reijgers also swam this race and finished in 3:13.95. Boulware and Desborough both swam the 100-yard butterfly finishing with times of 1:34.28 and 1:44.95.

The 100-yard freestyle was one of the most anticipated races of the day. Inacker the conference champion from last year was hoping to see another first place finish but fell to Wildcat, Bubb, by less than a second, finishing with still an impressive time of 1:02.00. Dominique Player (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) also swam this race and finished in 1:21.07 along with teammate Bratis who swam a time of 1:17.38. In the 100-yard backstroke Berry and Boulware finished in top places taking second and third with times of 1:17.55 and 1:27.94.

Alulis was a powerhouse in the 500-yard freestyle taking powerful strokes each lap which her a time of 6:10.92 and dropping eight seconds from the last meet. Teammate Mower took second in the 500 finishing in 6:18.86. The final individual event of the day was the 100-yard breaststroke. Kriner finished in second place with a time of 1:32.42 and Player in fourth with a time of 1:43.90.

Wrapping up the meet was the 200-yard freestyle relay. This was the make it or break it event for the Falcons to get their first ever win against the Cazenovia Wildcats. The first-place relay included Inacker, Kriner, Mower, and Alulis who finished with a time of 2:02.92. The Falcons were also able to secure the second-place finish who included Reijgers, Player, Desborough, and Bratis who finished in 2:23.94.

The Falcons are currently 2-0 in conference competition. They will travel to Delhi, New York next Saturday to compete at the SUNY Delhi Invitational where they will once again see the Wildcats who will be coming for redemption.
