ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team won seven total matches en route to a 34-13 victory over Muhlenberg College on Thursday night at Memorial Hall in the second annual Battle For Allentown.
"We'll take that win," said Head Wrestling Coach
Alex Depew. "That certainly isn't the product that we want to put on the mat, and as a coaching staff we need to have our wrestlers more prepared. That falls on me."
The Falcons picked up two wins by fall, one by tech fall, and four wins by forfeit.
First-year
Mary Lopes (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) collected the victory at 103 by forfeit to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead.
At 110, first-year Sylvyn Parham (Allentown, Pa.) defeated junior
Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) by tech fall to put the Mules on the scoreboard.
After Val's forfeit win at 117, first-year
Andi Bibeau (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) took down Alessandra Rodriguez by fall (1:59) at 124 to build onto the Cedar Crest lead.
Following Snyder's victory by forfeit at 131, junior
Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) lost to Gabrielle Roberts by fall (4:21) at 138.
First-year
Samantha Goworek (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) was defeated by first-year Riley Lynch (Williamsburg, Va.) by tech fall at 145.
The Falcons went onto win the final three matches at 160, 180, and 207.
Senior
Draydon Charman (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) beat sophomore Karla Lazaro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) by fall (4:36) at 160, junior
Janeyda Ortiz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) claimed the win by tech fall at 180, and junior
Sarah Seltzer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) picked up the forfeit triumph at 207 for the 34-13 final.
In an extra match at 110, Lopes was defeated by first-year Val Sanchez (Bristol, Pa.) via fall and in an extra match at 145, junior
Maddie Stultz (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) took down sophomore Ella Pomeranz (Denver, Colo.) by fall (1:42).
"Travis Spencer is a good coach and is always going to have his team prepared," continued Depew. "Otherwise, there were solid performances. Andi continues to lead and dominate her opponents. We let that Stanford match slip by us, but ultimately we want Alaina to keep getting those tough matches. It's what will prepare her for regionals. But as far as for the Battle of Allentown, we're proud to claim another victory."
Cedar Crest (2-1 overall) will next compete at the Sam Case Classic at McDaniel College on Sunday, November 23. The Falcons will square off against Randolph College at 12:30 p.m. and the host Green Terror at 1:30 p.m.
