Val Sets First-Year Wins Record For Wrestling at Will Abele Open

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College wrestling team took part in the Will Abele Open on Saturday, hosted by Ursinus College. With a pair of wins on Saturday, first-year Mel Val (Tracy City, Tenn./St. Andrew's Sewanee) now has 17 on the season, which is now the new record for wins for a first-year in program history.

After a bye in the Round of 16, senior Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) lost to Mandy Gavares by tech fall. In the consolation round, Jackson was defeated by Finley Hall of York College by way of tech fall.

Following a bye in the opening round, sophomore Leilani Martinez (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township Senior) was topped by Izabella Frezzo by tech fall in the quarterfinals. Martinez was then beaten by Sylvyn Parham by tech fall.

Following a bye, Gisele Ramirez of York College defeated first-year Arianna Gonzalez (Fallsburg, N.Y./Fallsburg Junior Senior) by fall in the Round of 16. In the consolation round, Gonzalez suffered a tech fall loss to Sophia Garcia of New Jersey City University.

After a bye in the opening round, Val took down Nuria Kojic by decision, 9-0. In the quarterfinals, the first-year was defeated by fall (5:15) by Isabella Washington-Vasquez of East Stroudsburg University. Val earned their second win of the day, taking down Janieliz Cotto of Western New England University by decision, 6-0. Val was then beaten by fall (4:27) by Dianna Pineda of Alfred State.

Sophomore Alaina Stanford (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) received a bye in the Round of 32 and was then defeated by Western New England University's Abigail Alicandro by way of fall (3:00). In the consolation round, Stanford won back-to-back bouts by decision, topping Claire Daity of New Jersey City University, 6-0, and then Natalia Morales of New Jersey City University, 3-0. The sophomore then lost to Western New England University's Jaden Coppins by tech fall.

Graduate student Rachel DeGiulio (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) began her day with a tech fall loss to Vivica Pannell of MIT. She then collected three wins in the consolation round. She started with a victory over Jakia Aiken of Maine Maritime Academy. DeGiulio followed the win with a triumph by fall (2:14) over Elmira College's Tess Clabaugh. She earned another victory, topping Muhlenberg College's Penelope Schneider by fall (1:54). DeGiulio then finished her day with a loss by decision, 12-6, to Angelica Ramos of East Stroudsburg University.

Senior Zakiyyah Sabir (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia E&T) started her day with a bye and then lost to Elmira College's Zoey Lints by tech fall. First-year Symarah Drey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also competed at 145 and began her day with a loss by tech fall to Taylor Mead of McDaniel College.

In the consolation round, Drey earned a tech fall victory over Muhlenberg College's Ella Pomeranz and then a win by decision, topping Kierstin Piontkowski of Centenary University, 12-6. Drey finished her day with a loss via fall to Paityn DeLong of East Stroudsburg University.

Sabir started her consolation round with a bye and then took down Maine Maritime Academy's Cecillia Edwards via fall (0:18). She then lost by fall to Mead to end her day.

Junior Draydon Charman (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) began her day with a fall loss to Ursinus' Emma Matera. She then won her first match in the consolation round, taking down Muhlenberg College's Julianna Fiorella via fall (2:39). Charman concluded her day with loss by fall to Muhlenberg College's Kelsey Gelb.

First-year Lexy Jones (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area Senior) was defeated by Mikayla Maloy of Western New England University via fall to start her day. In the consolation round, Jones lost to York College's Allison Brandt by way of fall.

Cedar Crest will next take part in the Pennsylvania Women's Collegiate State Championships, which will occur at East Stroudsburg University on Sunday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m.
